During the summer, Whittier is served twice daily by the Glacier Discovery train. This Alaska Railroad route runs roundtrip from Anchorage. In the morning, the train pulls into Whittier at 11:05 AM and departs at 11:45 AM. From here, it continues to the Spencer Whistle Stop and turns around at Grandview. On the return trip it arrives in Whittier at 6:05 PM and departs at 6:45 PM. Visitors can easily turn this train ride into a fun day trip out of Anchorage by adding a glacier day cruise in the afternoon.
The Park Connection Motorcoach also provides Whittier transportation on scheduled cruise days. For visitors embarking on a cruise, the motorcoach travels to Whittier from Anchorage, leaving at 3:00 PM and arriving to the cruise terminal at 5:00 PM. This is a very convenient cruise transportation option if you don't want to spend the day in Whittier before boarding. For passengers finishing their Inside Passage cruise in Whittier, the motorcoach departs for Anchorage at 9:45 AM. From here, visitors can catch a flight out, or better yet, head onto a post-cruise land package that kicks off in Talkeetna or Denali National Park. The Park Connection is the only cruise transportation option for independent travelers that offers same-day service from Whittier to Denali Park.
