Getting Around Alaska in the Winter
You could always go by dog sled or ski equipped bush plane, but there are easier ways for travelers to get around Alaska in the wintertime.
Rental Cars
Many travelers considering a winter visit to Alaska ask whether it is possible to drive during the season. The main highways in Southcentral and Interior Alaska (there are only a handful) are plowed throughout the year. With the usual consideration for safe travel on possibly slick roads, a rental car is a great way to get around on a winter vacation, especially if it's equipped with four-wheel drive.
Alaska Railroad Winter Service
Pair wintery scenery with the Alaska Railroad's classic Adventure Class service and you've got the Aurora Winter Train. This specialty train runs between Anchorage and Fairbanks on weekends and some midweek days throughout the winter season. Major stops along the way include Talkeetna and Denali National Park, both of which offer winter activities as well.
