Overview
Departing from the far end of the Alaska Railroad's main line, this 122-mile route from Fairbanks to Denali National Park traverses the northernmost section of track in North America. The scenery is telltale of this high latitude. Swaths of permafrost limit growth of big trees, so passengers relaxing in their upper level seats have unimpeded views of vast tundra. As the route continues south, the Alaska Range grows taller on the horizon. After crossing several waterways, the track swings alongside the Nenana River, and winds above river rapids through the Nenana Canyon, before pulling into the park depot just after noon.
Unimpeded tundra views from upper level seats.
Wilderness Express train cars have two levels. All passenger seating is on the upper level under full-length dome windows. The car's reclining leather seats are equipped with power outlets and fold-down tray tables. A car attendant provides bar service direct to passenger seats.
An outdoor viewing platform and private dining area are located on the lower level. The Wilderness Express offers a standout dining experience. Onboard chefs prepare breakfast on this four-hour morning ride to Denali Park. The menu features local favorites like Mountain Blueberry Pancakes, the Hearty Miner's Breakfast, and the heart-healthy Wilderness Cream of Barley featuring locally milled grain. A bar in the second-level seating area also serves espresso, coffee cocktails, locally crafted beer, and wine.
More Details
Wilderness Express railcars are locally owned and operated by a leading Alaska-based tour company. The railcars are used by cruise lines and escorted tours, but they also welcome independent travelers. The Wilderness Express offers adult and child rates, making this a more affordable premier rail option for families traveling with kids age 2 to 11.
What to Bring
Bring a camera, medications, and government issued photo ID. Bring a credit card for additional on-board purchases (cash not accepted). It is a good idea to dress in layers as it is often chilly on the outside viewing platform.
Special Instructions
Check in at the depot with a valid government issued photo ID one hour prior to departure. Boarding passes with seat assignments will be issued then. The Wilderness Express offers checked baggage service. Passengers are allowed two checked bags plus one carry on, with dimension and weight restrictions like those of airlines. The railroad charges $20 per item for oversized or excess baggage.
