In the morning, kick off your wintery Alaska adventure with a tour of Anchorage. Visit historic sites downtown, walk through Earthquake Park, and see the city's famed Lake Hood Seaplane Base where even in winter bush planes come and go.
After lunch on your own, the group heads along the icy Turnagain Arm for a visit to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center. Tonight get a glimpse of some authentic Alaskan characters at the annual Iditarod Musher's Banquet.
Breakfast and dinner included. Overnight Anchorage.
Today learn all about dog mushing in Alaska from one of the sport's renowned mushers, Martin Buser. At his Happy Trails Kennel north of Anchorage, visit with sled dogs, hear harrowing and heartwarming stories from the trail, and check out the route that Iditarod teams will soon travel. A stop at the Iditarod Headquarters on the way back to Anchorage wraps up the day.
Breakfast included. Overnight Anchorage.
Head to 4th Avenue this morning to claim a good spot for the Ceremonial Start of the Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race. Downtown Anchorage comes to life with the excited sled dogs, mushers, their support teams, and fans. Dog teams depart every two minutes from the starting line. Once the last team has departed, the group will spend the afternoon at the Anchorage Museum.
Breakfast included. Overnight Anchorage.
Wear your layers and pack your hand warmers, today the group is off to see the official Iditarod start in Willow. Warm up, grab snacks and drinks, and shop from local artists and craftsmen in the Willow Community Center between team starts. The tour concludes with a return trip to Anchorage in the evening.
Breakfast included.
