Itinerary
Read on for a day-by-day breakdown of this tour package. Click on an item to get started, and be sure to contact us if you have any questions.
Fly into Ted Stevens International Airport and transfer to your hotel. Overnight Anchorage.
Get your first taste of Alaska's history with an Anchorage city tour this morning. The tour culminates at the Glen Alps overlook for panoramic views of the city, Cook Inlet, and mountains beyond. After the trip, pick up your vehicle rental.
This afternoon, you'll head out on a totally different kind of city tour, this one by bike, down the Tony Knowles Coastal Trail. The paved path runs several miles through forests, bordering the silty Knik Arm. The trip is fully guided and includes all gear. Overnight Anchorage.
Your Alaska road trip starts today as you head down the highway toward Seward. The road is a National Scenic Byway, and as soon as you round the bend near Potter's Marsh, it's easy to see why. Cliffsides frequented by Dall sheep will be on your left, and the dramatic Turnagain Arm to the right.
After passing Girdwood, a little ski town that's worth a side trip, the highway continues to the end of the arm and then wraps south onto the Kenai Peninsula. The views shift to meadows and glassy lakes overlooked by avalanche-scoured mountainsides. Overnight Seward.
You're taking to the pristine waters of Resurrection Bay on a day cruise today. The ultimate destination is Northwestern Fjord within Kenai Fjords National Park. Wildlife viewing can be exceptional in this remote inlet, as are the views of its tidewater glaciers. The excursion includes a morning snack and deli lunch. Overnight Seward.
Enjoy this morning's drive back through Anchorage and on to the Alaska Glacier Lodge. Your afternoon tour takes off from here. It's a heli-hike, an uncommonly thrilling combination of a helicopter flight into the mountains, alpine landing, and guided backcountry hike. There are no trailheads and no other hikers, just pure wilderness. Overnight in your own cabin at the Alaska Glacier Lodge.
It'll be difficult to leave the tranquility of your Knik River accommodations, but there's plenty to look forward to on your drive to Valdez. You'll drive through the Matanuska Valley, twisting and climbing through the steeply cut glacial terrain. Past Sheep Mountain, you'll top out onto high, rolling hills. Once you've cruised through the crossroads at Glennallen, you'll head up and over Thompson Pass. Overnight Valdez.
Walk to the Valdez harbor for a day cruise through Prince William Sound to the Columbia Glacier. The Columbia is one of Alaska's largest tidewater glaciers, a behemoth of jagged ice that cascades from an elevation of 10,000 feet all the way to the water. Overnight Valdez.
Grab road snacks before you leave, you have some remote stretches of highway ahead of you today. You'll return to Glennallen, and then continue north on the Richardson Highway to Fairbanks. The landscape is vast tundra, bordered by distant snowcapped mountains, the sky big and wide. Overnight Fairbanks.
Continue your northern journey today with a full-day tour into the Arctic Circle. The tour starts by van on the Dalton Highway to the tiny outpost of Coldfoot. Your return trip is made by small plane, the aerial views giving you an even finer appreciation of the remote experience. Overnight Fairbanks.
Fairbanks marks a turning point. From the northern "Golden Heart City", you'll begin your journey back south. You'll have time after your shorter two-hour drive to the Denali Park area to enjoy a guided walking tour near the national park's entrance. Overnight Denali.
Yesterday's hike was a pleasant primer to today's day tour into Denali National Park. You'll travel by bus along the Park Road, the only roadway to enter the park boundary. Between the landscapes, wildlife, and insightful narration by the driver-guide, the experience is immersive. Overnight Denali.
As you continue to Talkeetna today, you'll drive along the border of Denali National Park to the southern side of the Alaska Range. You'll see those notorious granite peaks up close aboard a Denali flightseeing glacier landing tour this afternoon. These flights are quite popular, and it's easy to see why: The mountain scenery is simply stunning. Overnight Talkeetna.
Take your time to enjoy breakfast in Talkeetna this morning before your final drive back to Anchorage. The package concludes with a final overnight in Anchorage.
