For nearly 40 years after the completion of the Alaska Railroad, Talkeetna was only reachable by rail. A spur road was built in 1962, giving visitors access by road as well.
Talkeetna is on the Alaska Railroad's Denali Star route. The town sees two Denali Star trains daily in the summer, one traveling north in the morning, and the other south in the afternoon. Both Adventure Class and GoldStar Dome tickets are available on the Denali Star.
Along with the Alaska Railroad, two private dome train services visit Talkeetna. The Wilderness Express runs on the Denali Star route and schedule, while the McKinley Explorer dome train follows an independent timetable.
