Overview
The mighty Susitna River, known to locals as the "Big-Su," cascades from glaciated mountains in southcentral Alaska. It winds its way south and west, eventually tumbling through a tight gorge aptly named the Devil's Canyon. This five-hour trip takes daring travelers into that roiling water for an outdoor adventure experience unlike any other in Alaska.
Silty water churns wildly as the boat pushes upriver.
The boat tour starts in Talkeetna where guests board a custom-built river boat with fully enclosed cabin, seatbelt equipped seats, and big windows. A crew of two lead the tour, the boat captain and a naturalist guide. The guide entertains with a fascinating nature and history narration along the 65-mile jet boat ride up the Susitna, but everyone's focus turns to the rapids as the boat approaches Devil's Canyon. The silty water churns wildly as the captain drives past standing waves and car-sized boulders. Now, fully into the heart of Class V rapids, the captain holds the boat in the churning whitewater long enough for passengers to snap pictures of the unbelievable scene.
After leaving the turbulent canyon behind, the tour heads to a recreated Dena'ina encampment. Guests take a quarter-mile nature walk and learn how the earliest Native Alaskans lived in the area. The interpretive site also features a 1900s-era trapper's cabin. The tour concludes with a swift ride back to Talkeetna.
