Overview
With its huge rise over the surrounding landscape, there's no mistaking the grandeur of the largest mountain in North America. This flightseeing tour brings visitors even closer to Denali with a remarkable glacier landing experience.
The sheer scale can only be experienced by flying.
The flight leaves from the Talkeetna Airport about 60 miles by air from the mountain. It is scenic from the moment the plane takes off. Wide rivers snake through spruce forests, the water turned milky grey by glacial silt. The vast Alaskan Range grows larger and larger as forests give way to high alpine meadows, snow fields, and granite peaks.
The sheer scale of these mountains can only be experienced by flying through them, and yet passengers on a glacier landing tour go a step beyond to stand amongst them. After a smooth ski landing on a snow-covered glacier, guests spend about 30 minutes marveling at the extreme landscape, snapping photos, and even playing in the summer powder before taking off on the return flight to Talkeetna.
More Details
The tour operator runs several different types of aircraft, including the Cessna 185 (four passengers), DeHavilland Beaver (six to seven passengers), and DeHavilland Turbine Otter (10 passengers). Passengers on all planes have window seats. Headsets with mics are provided.
What to Bring
Bring a jacket, sunglasses, and camera. The glacier can be chilly, so also bring a hat and gloves. Guests will be given overboots to protect their shoes. Passengers concerned about motion sickness should bring preventatives with them, as none are available at the tour operator office.
Special Instructions
Check in 30 minutes prior to flight departure. Accurate passenger weight is required for aircraft weight and balance. The tour operator carefully monitors weather in the mountains and will not fly if conditions are unsafe. If this happens, full refunds are issued for flights cancelled due to weather, and partial refunds issued if they're unable to do a glacier landing but still able to fly on a shorter tour.
Transfers & Meeting Points
The tour operator provides complimentary shuttle service to the airport from locations in Talkeetna when arranged in advance. Self-drive guests can park in front of the tour office at the Talkeetna Airport.
