- Seward Resurrection Bay Kayaking
Overview
With its often calm waters and shorter duration, this relaxed kayak trip in Resurrection Bay is a favorite of travelers new to kayaking. The tour starts with a 20-minute drive from the Seward Small Boat Harbor to Lowell Point. Snacks are provided, as is an entertaining narration detailing Seward's place in Alaskan history. After reaching the point, kayaking guides take a brief half hour to outfit guests, teach the basics of paddling, and get everyone situated in their tandem sea kayaks.
Encounter all manner of marine life along this route.
One by one, the guides push the kayaks out into the bay, the sound of the shoreline giving way to the hush of paddles dipping into the water. The group slowly paddles out and then turns to parallel the rugged shoreline of Caines Head State Recreation Area. It's not uncommon to encounter all manner of marine life along this route. Sea otters frequent the deep water offshore, while seals haul out on rocky outcroppings and seabirds nest in the cliffs above. Bald eagles are also populous, their white heads standing out among the green mountains and blue waters.
Partway through the kayak trip the guides steer their group to a rocky beach for a short shore excursion. This serves as a welcome break from paddling, but it also affords guests the chance to explore a stretch of coast on foot. A path winds through tall grasses and back to stands of huge Sitka spruce trees. Depending on the exact location and time of year, the group may even be able to visit a clearwater creek to see spawning salmon work their way up upstream. The trip concludes with a relaxed paddle back to Lowell Point and return drive into Seward.
