Overview
The full-day Northwestern Fjord/Aialik Bay Kayaking tour starts with a private boat ride out of the bustling Seward harbor and into Kenai Fjords National Park. The trip is as much a wildlife cruise as it is a water taxi, with the captain and kayak guide always attentive to the surrounding area. Tour guests often see puffins, eagles, otters, seals, and even whales on the two- to three-hour water taxi. To view such animals is an unexpected bonus in a day already filled with wonder.
Occasionally unleashing massive hunks of ice with crashing booms.
The tour's ultimate kayaking destination changes by the day. The captain heads to where the paddling looks best, scouting out either the Northwestern Fjord or Holgate Arm for the perfect spot. When it is found guests slip into their kayaks and push out into the dark blue water. The kayak guide joins and leads the group toward the tidewater glacier at the end of the bay.
The setting is jaw dropping. Craggy cliffsides marked with moss and scrappy spruce trees funnel toward the wall of ice tumbling into the water. The overall quietness of the surroundings only serves to amplify the sound of the glacier. It pops and groans, occasionally unleashing massive hunks of ice with crashing booms. After enjoying a homemade lunch (often while floating in their kayaks in front of the glacier) guests return once again to the water taxi. The day concludes with a boat ride back to Seward.
