Kenai Fjords Cruises
Day cruises to Kenai Fjords National Park depart Seward's Small Boat Harbor daily during the summer months, giving visitors a closer look at the rich marine environment and ancient glaciers that stretch into the area's many fjords. The Kenai Fjords National Park Glacier & Wildlife Cruise provides an onboard while cruising 120 miles roundtrip to Aialik Bay. The boat's captain provides ongoing narration while passengers view tidewater glaciers and keep an eye out for whales, seabirds, bears, eagles, and mountain goats.
For the traveler who wishes to see even more of the park, take the Kenai Fjords Northwestern Fjord Cruise. The cruise navigates deep into the isolated Northwestern Fjord. Offering a more intimate experience on a smaller vessel, the Northwestern Fjord Explorer Cruise plots a similar 150-mile course and is quite popular among wildlife photographers. Both cruises include a light breakfast and deli-style lunch.
Looking for a bit more adventure on the water? Try a guided kayak exploration of the scenic shorelines around Resurrection Bay or an epic paddling adventure into Northwestern Fjord. Ranging from a few hours to all day, kayak tours are a great way to investigate the smaller bays and inlets of Kenai Fjords National Park.
Day cruises into Kenai Fjords National Park are only available between May and September and operate in all kinds of weather from the Seward harbor. Be sure to dress in appropriate clothing: Rubber-soled shoes, a good rain jacket, hat, and gloves will keep you more comfortable and the trip that much more enjoyable.
On any cruise, also be sure to bring a camera and binoculars. If seasickness is of concern, take motion sickness medication at least 30 minutes prior to departure.
Getting to and from your day cruise can be done via the Alaska Railroad's Coastal Classic train, by Park Connection Motorcoach, or rental car. Of course, spending a night or two in Seward is always a good idea if your schedule allows so. See our Seward hotels page for ideas.
