Rocks, Rivers and Glaciers Hike with Transfers

Overview

Your moderately strenuous hike and tour starts with a convenient pickup at the Alaska Glacier Lodge. From here it's a scenic 20-minute drive to the Matanuska River. Your journey through the area's glacial history kicks off with a stop at a gravel bar to discuss how glaciers have carved this wide, sweeping river valley.

The hike starts from a well-maintained trailhead a short drive from the river. The trail ascends about a mile through boreal forest. Along the way, your guide points out glacial features and talks about how the enormous force of ice and gravity even led to the region's identity as an agricultural center for the state. Once at the trail's summit, you'll have time to catch your breath while enjoying views of the Chugach Mountains, Talkeetna Mountains and, weather permitting, the Knik Glacier. These glacial valley views from up high bring the glacier and geology lessons learned to life.

At the summit you'll have a little while for photos and a snack before heading back down the trail. The tour concludes with a drop off back at the Alaska Glacier Lodge.

More Details

Hiking location varies based on current conditions and the group. Regardless of location, expect a moderately strenuous hike. This is a small group tour with no more than five guests per guide. Total tour time is 4.5 hours, which includes about an hour roundtrip transfer from the Alaska Glacier Lodge.

What to Bring

This adventure departs rain or shine. Be prepared with a backpack, layers, warm socks, full rain gear, hiking shoes, a warm hat, gloves, and a camera.

Special Instructions

This is a moderately strenuous hiking excursion. Guests must be able to walk on uneven ground for up to four miles with an average elevation gain of 800 to 1000 feet.
