Overview
Perched on a mountainside above a glacier in Wrangell-St. Elias National Park, the Kennicott Glacier Lodge's location couldn't be more quintessentially Alaskan. The family-owned lodge gives guests access to both the fascinating history and wilderness of the McCarthy/Kennicott area. Built in the visage of the area's 1930s mine company buildings, it feels right at home alongside the neighboring Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark. The Kennicott Glacier is close enough for guests to hear it crack and pop on still summer evenings.
Access fascinating history and wilderness of the McCarthy/Kennicott area.
The Kennicott Glacier Lodge offers two room types, Main Lodge and South Wing. Main Lodge rooms offer rustic comfort in the central replica mining era building. These rooms are smaller yet cozy, with two beds and a cold water sink. There are seven shared bathrooms and six shower rooms for Main Lodge guest use. South Wing rooms have two queen beds and an ensuite bathroom with shower. In the Main Lodge common areas guests will find comfortable seating, board games, and reading material, plus a porch with mountain views.
The Kennicott Glacier Lodge restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Hearty breakfast fare often includes favorites like pancakes, French toast, scrambled eggs, and fresh fruit. At lunch there is a selection of soups and sandwiches. Guests who will be out can sign up for a bag lunch instead. A single nightly dinner service is offered at 7:00 PM. Reservations are required. Guests enjoy a fixed menu including homemade breads and desserts. The lodge can accommodate dietary restrictions with advance notice. Meals are included in the room rate.
More Details
The Kennicott Glacier Lodge is located in the Wrangell-St. Elias National Park. It is about eight hours from Anchorage by car, with the final 60 miles of the drive on the gravel McCarthy Road. Because of this portion of the drive, guests must have a 4x4 rental car approved on remote roads (major rental companies in Alaska do not permit their cars on the McCarthy Road). Guests can take a complimentary shuttle from the end of the McCarthy Road to the lodge. The tiny town of McCarthy is about five miles away, and the Kennecott Mines National Historic Landmark is just a minute away by foot.
Due to the lodge's remote location, a two-night minimum stay is required.
