- Ultimate Kachemak Bay Kayak & Hike from Homer
Overview
Your full-day adventure into Kachemak Bay State Park starts with a water taxi ride from Homer to Petersen Bay. No matter the weather, the ride is a stunning one. In the sun, spangles of light flitter across the water surface. When overcast, the clouds cling dramatically to the tops of bayside mountains. Along the way you'll pass by Gull Island, home to thousands of nesting seabirds.
The perfect Alaskan day.
After landing at a rocky beach in Petersen Bay, it's time to gear up and slip out into the water by kayak. The route takes you through protected water bordered by rocky shoreline and deep green trees. Sea otters and bald eagles often make an appearance.
After a lunch stop, you'll trade kayaks for the trail on a two-mile hike into an old growth forest. Your destination is a beautiful lake fed by the Grewingk Glacier. Sometimes the glacier calves massive chunks of ice that slowly make their way toward a beach at the lake's far end. It's here that you'll spend time exploring and taking photos before hiking about two miles out via the Saddle Trail. This perfect Alaskan day concludes with a short water taxi back to Homer.
