- Elephant Rock Kayak Adventure from Homer
Overview
Travelers to Homer are treated to quintessential coastal Alaska scenery on this six-hour guided kayak trip. The tour starts on the Homer Spit, a natural land formation home to the town's busy harbor. Here the tour boards a water taxi for a beautiful 25-minute ride across Kachemak Bay to Yukon Island.
Quintessential coastal Alaska scenery.
The setting is classic. Craggy rock shores are bordered by Sitka spruce, the trees tall from plentiful water and a mild climate. Amongst this scenery, the guide briefly goes over kayak operation and safety before fitting everyone in the group with lifejackets and spray skirts. After slipping into the sea kayaks, it's off into the water of Kachemak Bay.
Following along at a casual paddling pace, the group makes a leisurely circuit around Yukon Island. The deep marine water and tidal lagoons provide a thriving habitat for all manner of animals. Out in the deeper marine waters the guide points out sea otters, eagles, and curious seals. In the protected shallows, the group spots intertidal creatures. Colorful sea stars and anemones cling to the rocks just below the surface of the clear water. Partway through the paddle the group stops for a lunch break on a beach. The trip concludes with a return water taxi to Homer.
