Overview

For as fun and funky as Homer is, it's the bordering water that makes the small coastal town so memorable. This four-hour kayak trip takes you into that pristine marine world. It all begins with a 25-minute water taxi ride across Kachemak Bay to Yukon Island.

You'll spot otters, seals, and bald eagles.

The island sits at the mouths of Sadie Cove and Tutka Bay. After some time suiting up and practicing paddling and steering, you'll head out with your guide on a course along the island's shoreline. Your backdrop is as sublime as it is dramatic: Long, sloping beaches give way to craggy rocks and the tough spruce trees that cling to them.

Wildlife thrives throughout this environment, and with luck you'll spot otters, seals, and bald eagles. Seabirds are plentiful, as are intertidal creatures. The tour continues at a mellow pace with lots of time to marvel at the setting before wrapping up with a return water taxi to Homer.

What to Bring

This active outdoor adventure operates in most weather conditions. It is important to dress in warm synthetic layers. Consider wearing a long-sleeved shirt, long hiking pants (not jeans), a fleece or down jacket, and comfortable shoes. Bring along a rain jacket as well. Only light snacks are provided, so be sure to bring your own lunch and a full water bottle. Don't forget sunglasses and sunscreen.

Special Instructions

Guests should be prepared for a few hours of moderate activity. Previous kayaking experience is not necessary. The tour welcomes children age 5 and older.

The Eagles Nest Half-Day Kayak Trip leaves from the tour operator office on the Homer Spit. There are several free and pay parking lots in the area. Homer is just under five hours from Anchorage by car.
