Overview
Over three days and two nights, this trip treats adventurous travelers to an unforgettable, immersive experience in the great north. The fully guided trip starts at the Fairbanks airport, where guests board a small airplane bound for the distant outpost of Deadhorse on the North Slope. The two-hour flight gives guests an immediate appreciation for the spectacular remoteness of northern Alaska. After landing, the group is met by their driver/guide for the next three days. The first day culminates with a shuttle ride out to the Arctic Ocean.
An unforgettable, immersive experience in the great north.
Day two takes the group south out of Deadhorse, the tour van slowly making its way along the farthest reaches of the Dalton Highway as it parallels the Sag River and Trans-Alaska Pipeline. The highway, which for all but a few miles is gravel, climbs into Alaska's Brooks Range and crosses the Continental Divide at Atigun Pass. The group stops at the mining town of Wiseman, population 20, before ending the day at the even smaller outpost of Coldfoot.
There's more to learn, and sights to be seen, on the final day of the tour, which covers some 250 miles back to Fairbanks. Favorite stops along the route include the Yukon River, official Arctic Circle boundary line, and the Arctic Circle Trading Post in Joy.
More Details
Arctic Circle Air Adventure Southbound guests fly north to Deadhorse, and return to Fairbanks via van over two days. The trip overnights in Deadhorse and Coldfoot. Accommodations in these remote outposts are very rustic, with bunk-style rooms and shared baths. Guests must check in at the tour operator office at least one hour prior to tour departure.
The Southbound Arctic Ocean Adventure departs only on Tuesdays and Fridays.
What to Bring
As with most of Alaska, the weather above the Arctic Circle can be unpredictable. Pack warm layers, a good jacket, hat, gloves, sturdy walking shoes, and rain gear. Bring a camera, binoculars, and bug spray. Because the trip goes into remote locations, bring essential medications as well.
It is very important to limit luggage to one small overnight bag. Guests are limited to just 10 to 15 pounds of luggage per person. If needed, the tour operator can store excess baggage.
Special Instructions
Accurate passenger weight is required for aircraft weight and balance.
Alaska's Arctic is a true wilderness region. Although rare, weather or mechanical factors can result in multi-hour delays. Medical facilities, communication, and transportation infrastructure are limited. Travelers to this region should be of reasonable health and physical condition.
A valid picture ID, preferably a driver's license or passport, is required to access the Arctic Ocean. At the time of booking, guests must provide their identification number and issuing state or province or country. The same ID must be presented during the tour.
