Overview
As massive as it is, most visitors to Alaska only see a tiny bit of the state. This three-day, two-night excursion takes the curious and the adventurous all the way north to the Arctic Ocean. The fully guided trip starts in Fairbanks where guests board a comfortable tour van in the morning and head north out of the city. On this first day, the route winds along the rugged Dalton Highway, over the Yukon River, and into the Arctic Circle. Guests spend their first overnight in the tiny outpost of Coldfoot.
An excursion for the curious and adventurous.
On day two, the tour continues through the wilderness community of Wiseman and over the Brooks Range via the beautiful Atigun Pass. The group stops frequently to take in the unique landscape, snapping photos of the Arctic Coastal Plain, and even digging into the permafrost during a roadside demonstration by the guide. It's a full day, but an endlessly engaging one.
After an overnight in Deadhorse, the final day starts with a tour of Prudhoe Bay and a bucket-list trip up to the coast of the Arctic Ocean. Here, guests dip their toes in the icy waters at the top of the world. The unrivaled experience concludes with a flight back to Fairbanks.
More Details
Arctic Circle Air Adventure Northbound guests drive north to Prudhoe Bay for two days, and return by air to Fairbanks on the third day. The trip overnights in Coldfoot and Deadhorse. Accommodations in these remote outposts are rustic, with bunk-style rooms and shared baths. Guests must check in at the tour operator office at least one hour prior to tour departure.
The Northbound Arctic Ocean Adventure departs only on Wednesdays and Fridays.
What to Bring
As with most of Alaska, the weather above the Arctic Circle can be unpredictable. Pack warm layers, a good jacket, hat, gloves, sturdy walking shoes, and rain gear. Bring a camera, binoculars, and bug spray. Because the trip goes into remote locations, bring essential medications as well.
It is very important to limit luggage to one small overnight bag. Guests are limited to just 10 to 15 pounds of luggage per person. If needed, the tour operator can store excess baggage.
Special Instructions
Accurate passenger weight is required for aircraft weight and balance.
Alaska's Arctic is a true wilderness region. Although rare, weather or mechanical factors can result in multi-hour delays. Medical facilities, communication, and transportation infrastructure are limited. Travelers to this region should be of reasonable health and physical condition.
A valid picture ID, preferably a driver's license or passport, is required to access the Arctic Ocean. At the time of booking, guests must provide their identification number and issuing state or province or country. The same ID must be presented during the tour.
