Overview
The interior of Alaska is wild and remote, inhospitable and yet surprisingly scenic. This full-day ground expedition north of Fairbanks gives adventurous travelers the chance to experience what few ever experience: Life above the Arctic Circle.
Learn the constant challenges of life in the Arctic.
Guests depart via comfortable passenger van, heading north out of Fairbanks and into the rolling hills that surround it. The interior of Alaska is unlike anywhere else in the state. Its terrain is defined by permafrost, the underground ice layer that blocks roots from growing and makes building and maintaining roads an engineering feat. After passing the town of Livengood, the group heads onto the Dalton Highway. The route is known to locals as the "Haul Road."
Along the 380-mile roundtrip drive to the Arctic Circle, guests stop to see the Trans-Alaska Pipeline and historic sites. The tour takes one break at the Arctic Circle Trading Post in the rural community of Joy, and another on the bank of the mighty Yukon River. Halfway through the day, with much fanfare, the group crosses into the Arctic Circle. The tour returns to Fairbanks with new stops along the outgoing route, arriving in the full daylight of Alaska's famed midnight summer sun.
More Details
Arctic Circle Drive Adventure guests spend 11 to 12 hours traveling by van or coach, and four to five hours exploring sites along the way. Guests must check in at the tour operator office at least 30 minutes prior to tour departure.
What to Bring
As with most of Alaska, the weather above the Arctic Circle can be unpredictable. Dress in warm layers and take a rain jacket. Bring a camera, binoculars, bug spray, snacks, and water. Because the trip goes into remote locations, bring essential medications as well.
Special Instructions
Meals are not included in this tour. Sack lunches are available for purchase at the Yukon River stop. Dinner is available for purchase at the Yukon River Camp Café on the return trip. Alaska's Arctic is a true wilderness region. Although rare, weather or mechanical factors can result in multi-hour delays. Medical facilities, communication, and transportation infrastructure are limited. Travelers to this region should be of reasonable health and physical condition.
