Fall comes early in Alaska, giving early-September travelers a chance to see fall colors many weeks before they come to the Lower 48. Here are a few of the best places to admire autumn in Alaska.

Matanuska Glacier

You may not hear glacier and automatically think of changing leaves. But trust us, there's nothing quite like how that blue ice makes the surrounding fall landscape pop. Check out the views from the Matanuska Glacier State Recreation Site at mile 101 on the Glenn Highway.

Talkeetna

Tiny Talkeetna is tucked into a forest full of cottonwood, birch, and alder. All together these deciduous beauties make for a fall color bonanza. Immerse yourself in this golden splendor on a hike around Talkeetna Lakes or on a stroll along one of the trails leaving from the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge.

Denali National Park

No Alaska fall foliage list is complete without the spectacular autumn colors in Denali National Park. In the park's front country you'll see trees turning yellow, but the surprising colors lie in the high places above treeline where low-lying tundra plants turn vibrant oranges and reds.
