Gift guide for Alaska travelers.

1. Milepost

Though a guidebook may feel like a throwback in these digital days, trust us: In Alaska, where cell service is spotty, a print copy of this "bible of North Country travel" is key to a great roadtrip. The Milepost is published annually with the new edition typically shipping around March.

2. Rain Jacket

Misty summer skies are a way of life in much of Alaska, so a good rain jacket is a must for any summer packing list. It pulls triple duty as a buffer in windy conditions and as layer to dissuade any mosquitoes that may pop up. Shop for a lightweight, packable shell that is sized right to fit over any layers underneath.

3. Eye Mask

Not all lodging has light-tight window coverings. Help your Alaska traveler get some shut eye even during bright summer nights with a comfy eye mask.

4. XtraTufs

As classic to Alaska as sourdough and salmon, XtraTufs are the go-to footwear for...well, pretty much anything. Easy to pull on and off, great for tidepooling and tromping through mud, no-slip grip for good traction on decks and docks, rinseable, comfortable, practical. Ankle high boot pictured above, but the brown calf-high style is the original design.

5. A Taste of Things to Come

Smoked salmon, birch syrup, sea salts, sourdough starter, teas, kelp salsa (really, it's delicious!). A great many local Alaska producers sell their foods and wares online. Check out Buy Alaska for inspiration.
