- Winter Snowshoeing Adventure from Anchorage
Overview
It's as true in winter as it is in summer: Anchorage boasts some of Alaska's very best hiking trails. On this excursion you'll have the chance to explore them by snowshoe. Your trip kicks off with a pickup in downtown Anchorage and brief drive up into the city's front range. The destination is Glen Alps, one of Anchorage's most popular trailheads. Here your guide will set you up with snowshoes. It takes a few careful steps at first, but you'll soon get the hang of the snowshoe stride.
Winter light casts a golden glow.
Introduction complete, it's onto the trail. Your path winds through spruce groves and alpine meadows. Soon you'll gain views of the picturesque South Fork Campbell Creek valley. This is a classic glacially-carved u-shaped valley with peaks lining both sides. The lower winter light often casts the landscape in a golden glow.
Snowshoes open up this wintery world, making it easy to feel like a kid playing in the snow again. The chance to spot moose, lynx, and winter-white hares and ptarmigan add to the fun. After about 2.5 miles your circuit ends at the trailhead. The tour wraps up with a return ride down to Anchorage.
More Details
The Winter Snowshoeing Adventure tour covers about 2.5 miles with 400 feet of elevation gain. The tour time includes an hour of travel and about two hours snowshoeing.
What to Bring
Proper gear is critical for comfort and safety on this winter excursion. Dress in layers, specifically a good base/thermal layer, midweight warm layer, and wind/waterproof outer layer. Opt for synthetic fabrics that dry quickly. Do not wear cotton. Wear waterproof, ankle-high winter boots. Be sure to bring a hat and gloves, sunglasses, and your camera.
Special Instructions
This is a moderate to strenuous activity. The guide will tailor the group's pace so that all guests are comfortable. No experience is necessary, but it is best enjoyed by those who can walk at least three miles on uneven terrain over the course of two hours. Many parts of the trail are steep and hilly.
