- Mush Your Own Dog Sled Tour from Anchorage (Winter)
Overview
No winter visit to Alaska is complete without seeing at least one sled dog team in action. This tour takes you even further, not only introducing you to this essential Alaskan activity but putting boots on the sled to mush your own team. The day starts with a hotel pickup in Anchorage and a two-hour drive to Talkeetna. Along the way you'll enjoy narration by your local driver/guide plus photo stops in case Denali, North America's highest peak, is "out."
Sled dog team in action.
Once you pull into Talkeetna you'll enjoy lunch in town before continuing on to the dogs. Excited barking surely greets you when you arrive at the kennel of Dallas Seavey, one of the legends of the mushing world. Mushing school starts right away with the kennel's experienced mushers and handlers teach you the basics of driving a dog team. Before you know it your team is harnessed and you're off for a six-mile run.
The route meanders on wintery trails lined by birch trees. A lead musher sets the pace and a tail musher follows along, so all you have to do is keep the sled steady as your team of huskies do their work. They are born runners and perfectly at home trotting through the snow with their pals. You'll have a break or two to take photos with these incredible K9 athletes before returning to the kennel. The tour concludes with a return trip to Anchorage.
