If you can't take your eyes off mountaintops and love a good climb, this guided hike is your ticket to Anchorage's alpine heights. The tour starts with a pickup in downtown Anchorage where your guide will recommend a trail depending on the day's conditions and interests of the group. With that, it's on to the mountains.
On the clearest days you'll have 360-degree views.
It's likely your trail will start above treeline, so from the get-go you'll be able to see much of the surrounding area as you head up the trail. Broad valleys carved by glaciers long ago, rugged peaks capped with snow well into summer, and myriad streams fed by meltwater define Anchorage's backcountry. As you climb higher the terrain turns to scraggly tundra. With luck you'll see Dall sheep and maybe even a bear or two in these high places.
With a steady pace you'll soon gain a ridgeline and those hard-won views from up top. On the clearest days you'll have a 360-degree view from the Cook Inlet to Denali to highest peaks of the Chugach Mountains. After some more mellower ridge walking, the hike wraps up with a long decent and return ride into Anchorage.
The Alpine Classic Trek covers about 5 miles with 2000 feet of elevation gain. The trail may vary based on the conditions and interests of the group. The tour time includes about an hour of travel and four hours hiking.
Wear comfortable outdoor hiking clothes and sturdy hiking shoes. Bring rain gear, extra warm layers, and a hat and gloves as needed for the weather. Don't forget a camera, binoculars, and water.
This is a strenuous activity with significant elevation gain and an oftentimes steep, rough trail. Some hiking experience recommended. Guests should have a good level of fitness and be able to walk at least 5 to 8 miles over very hilly terrain to best enjoy this active adventure.
