- Alaska Railroad Aurora Train Talkeetna to Fairbanks (Winter)
Overview
Leaving Talkeetna around midday, the train to Fairbanks slowly winds its way north along the Susitna River and the east side of east side of Kesugi Ridge. There are a handful of homesteads through this remote, densely forested landscape. It's not uncommon for the train to make a flag stop to let residents on and off. The nearest road is the Parks Highway, many miles away on the other side of the ridge.
Above a frozen cascade lined by iced cliffsides
Making its way up and over Broad Pass and pausing briefly at the Denali Depot, the train enters the Nenana River Canyon. It's a popular spot for whitewater rafting in summer, but in the winter it's a frozen cascade lined by iced cliffsides. Before reaching Fairbanks, the train crosses the Tanana River on one of the world's longest single-span bridges. The remainder of the route passes through moonlit tundra and forested hills before ending at the Fairbanks Depot around 8:30 PM.
