- Alaska Railroad Aurora Train Fairbanks to Talkeetna (Winter)
Overview
Long before the Parks Highway linked the larger towns in Alaska, the Alaska Railroad was the most efficient and comfortable way to travel in the winter. Modern train passengers will find the same is true today.
The river below a tumble of frozen rapids.
The route begins in the rolling tundra and spruce forests south of Fairbanks. Then, as the rail nears the Denali park area, it enters the steep Nenana River Gorge. The views along this twisting track make for great photos, especially with the gorge encrusted in ice and river below a tumble of frozen rapids. After a stop at the historic Denali Depot, the train heads on again. It crosses the Hurricane Gulch bridge and passes to the east of Kesugi Ridge, one of the more remote sections of track. After here the route draws nearest close to Denali, at one point coming within 40 miles of the summit, before ending in Talkeetna.
