Whittier was first connected to the rest of Alaska by train in the 1940s. It took a series of tunnels to do so, all of which passengers still pass through today as they travel between the tiny port town and Anchorage.
Whittier is served by the Alaska Railroad's Glacier Discovery train. The Glacier Discovery makes one daily roundtrip run from Anchorage, stopping in Whittier and then continuing to a remote turnaround at Grandview Pass on the Kenai Peninsula. In the morning, the train arrives in Whittier at 12:05 PM and departs at 12:45 PM. On the return trip, it arrives at 6:05 PM and departs at 6:45 PM.
This unique timetable makes this train perfect for passengers on Inside Passage cruises who are either beginning or ending their voyages in Whittier. It also coordinates well with Whittier day cruises.
The Whittier Depot is little more than a paved area with an awning and helpful staff. It's right next to the cruise loading area and harbor.
