Aptly known as the "Gateway to Denali," Talkeetna is a common stopping off point for passengers traveling by rail between Anchorage, Denali National Park, and Fairbanks. The town is just 40 miles from the highest mountain in North America.
Talkeetna is on the Denali Star route that connects Anchorage and Fairbanks. Passengers traveling north leave Anchorage at 8:15 AM and arrive in Talkeetna at 11:05 AM. Passengers continuing their journey to Denali Park depart at 11:20 AM. The southbound Denali Star train arrives in Talkeetna at 4:40 PM, departing at 5:00 PM for an 8:00 PM arrival into Anchorage.
The Denali Star train is run by the Alaska Railroad, which offers two levels of service on the route. The standard service is Adventure Class. The GoldStar Dome, the railroad's premium service, ensures passengers have reserved upper-level seating beneath full dome windows. It's a great way to take in Denali views on the track into and out of Talkeetna when the weather is clear.
Two specialty dome trains also run through the Talkeetna Depot. The Wilderness Express operates with the Denali Star train. The McKinley Explorer runs on a slightly different timetable. To see all train schedules with rates and availability, check out our Alaska Transportation Finder.
The Talkeetna Depot is located just a few blocks from the small town's busy Main Street. Local hotels like the Talkeetna Alaskan Lodge provide complimentary shuttles from the depot.
