- Spencer Glacier Float
Overview
The day begins with a serene morning train ride out of Anchorage aboard the Glacier Discovery (train tickets purchased separately). Guests booked on this float trip are greeted by their river guides on the way to the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop. The train reaches the remote stop at about 1:45 PM. Here, rafters hop onto an awaiting bus for a short ride down an old mining road to the shore of Spencer Lake.
Up-close views of piercingly blue masses of ice.
Guides outfit their guests and give a safety briefing before everyone climbs into the waiting rafts and push out onto the lake. Sometimes there are icebergs dotting the water, each one once a part of the glacier at the far end of the lake. The guide paddles close to the steadier icebergs grounded into the lake floor for up-close views of these piercingly blue masses of ice.
The raft slowly makes its way through the lake and into the Placer River. In high water, there are Class I and II rapids to navigate through, so even though an occasional light splash may find its way onto the raft, the float is a relaxed one. Through the seven-mile stretch of river, guests are treated to views of hanging glaciers, wildflowers, and even wildlife on occasion. The tour concludes at a river landing where guests board the Glacier Discover train on its way back toward Anchorage.
