Spencer Hike & Kayak with Rail from Anchorage
Your Spencer Glacier Hike starts with a very scenic ride on the Alaska Railroad’s Glacier Discovery train. The train departs from the Anchorage Depot located at 411 West First Avenue at 9:45am. Sit back and enjoy the comfortable seating and large picture windows. After traveling through Anchorage you will descend through the Anchorage Coastal Wildlife Refuge. This area, also commonly known as Potter’s Marsh, is a good place to spot migratory birds, waterfowl and moose. Your trip continues along the Turnagain Arm, a body of water featuring the world’s second highest tides at over 30 feet. Beluga whales can often be seen following salmon on the incoming tide, and Dall sheep frequent the rocky mountainsides. You will travel through Portage Valley viewing hanging glaciers, in and out of Whittier through North America’s longest railroad tunnel before stopping at the second Portage stop at about 1:15pm where your Girdwood based guides will board the train. Then the train will travel through the Placer River Valley in the Chugach National Forest to the Spencer Whistle Stop. During this portion of the trip you will be given a deli lunch that includes a turkey or vegetarian sandwich, chips, cookie, fruit and bottled water. From the Spencer Whistle Stop, hikers load onto a shuttle for a 1-mile drive to the edge of Spencer Lake. After safety and paddling instruction, groups of 4 or less paddle their tandem sea kayaks 1 hour and 1.5 miles across Spencer Glacier Lake, enjoying outstanding views of the Glacier and Icebergs floating in the lake. Once landing the Kayaks, a short off trail (rugged terrain) walk gains access onto the glacier. At the glaciers’ edge guests gear up with helmets, harnesses and crampons. After safety lessons and crampon practice by skilled and experienced glacier guides, groups travel onto the glacier and have about 2-3 hours to explore the amazing Ice features (blue ice, crevasses, ice caves, moulins, etc.). The 6 hours spent off the train includes many photo and rest stops to learn about interesting local wildlife, history and glaciology. For the return trip, you catch the Coastal Classic Train at 8:15pm, which takes you back to Anchorage at 10:15pm. There are dining cars on the train to purchase additional food and meals.
