For nearly 100 years, Denali National Park and Anchorage have been linked by rail. That connection was made long before a highway was built to the park entrance, and even today most travelers return to the city by train after exploring the vast expanses of this remote national park.
Comfortable return to the city after exploring Denali.
The railroad's flagship Denali Star train runs the 234-mile route from Denali Park to Anchorage. With an easy midday departure, the route leaves plenty of time for travelers to enjoy a more leisurely start to the day, or one final morning tour excursion. After checking in at the historic Denali Depot, passengers are greeted by rail hosts and directed to their comfortable assigned seats in either Adventure Class or GoldStar Dome cars. Those hosts provide historical narration and point out particularly photogenic views throughout the duration of the train trip.
As the train pulls from the station on its scenic journey south, it crisscrosses the Nenana River and climbs up to Broad Pass. A long, slow descent across high plateaus, through forests, and over many rivers follows. The train frequently passes through areas with unimpeded Denali views on clear days. Passengers can enjoy the sights from the large picture windows at their own seats or from top-deck dome areas. With plenty of time to enjoy lunch and dinner on board, the train pulls into the downtown Anchorage train depot at 8 PM.
The Alaska Railroad offers two levels of service between Denali Park and Anchorage: Adventure Class and GoldStar Dome. Adventure Class passengers enjoy spacious cars with tall windows and large seats, access to a shared dome observation car, and the ability to easily walk between different cars on the train. The GoldStar Dome offers passengers luxury rail service with reserved upper deck seating beneath large dome windows and all-inclusive meals. Alaska Tour & Travel is happy to offer our guests the choice of service to best suit their needs and budget. Click here for more train service details.
Snacks and beverages are available for purchase onboard in the Wilderness Café. Full-service meals are served in the lower level of the GoldStar dome car for GoldStar passengers only. Lunch, dinner (soup or salad, entrée, dessert), all non-alcoholic beverages, and two alcoholic beverages are included in the GoldStar ticket price.
Bring a camera, medications, and government issued photo ID. Bring a credit or debit card for additional onboard purchases (cash not accepted). It is a good idea to dress in layers, since the temperature can vary depending on the weather and the train car's heating and cooling system.
Check in at the Denali Depot with a valid government issued photo ID one hour prior to departure. Boarding passes with seat assignments will be issued then. All Adventure Class and GoldStar Dome passengers are assigned seats by the Alaska Railroad upon check in at the depot. The Alaska Railroad offers checked baggage service. Passengers are allowed two checked bags plus one carry on, with dimension and weight restrictions like those of airlines. The Alaska Railroad charges $20 per item for oversized or excess baggage.
Most Denali Park area hotels and lodges provide transportation to the Denali Depot. Upon arrival into Anchorage, passengers can transfer to their next destination by taxi, rideshare, or hotel shuttle (where available).
