Overview
Mornings are pleasant aboard the Alaska Railroad train bound for Talkeetna. The route is just under three hours, the service unbeatable, and the views lovely no matter the weather.
Midday arrival leaving plenty of time for afternoon excursions.
After leaving Anchorage and passing through Alaska's largest U.S. Air Force base, the track passes under the shadow of Pioneer Peak and turns due west across the Knik River bridge. Just past this point lay the Palmer Hay Flats, a state game refuge. The refuge's wetlands are an ideal habitat for moose and migrating water birds. It's not uncommon to spot wildlife, especially early in summer when moose cows graze in the flats with their young spring calves. These sights are enjoyed by passengers throughout the train, whether it's during a full-service breakfast in the dining car, or while sipping to-go coffee in the bistro.
After passing over the Matanuska River, traveling through Wasilla, and heading north out of Willow, the train arrives into the Talkeetna Depot around 11:05 AM. This late morning arrival leaves plenty of time for an afternoon flightseeing trip or outdoor excursion. The route also makes for a pleasant day trip out of Anchorage when combined with afternoon tours in Talkeetna and a return trip on an evening train or Park Connection motorcoach.
