"Absolutely loved the Gold Star experience - totally worth it! We were also pleasantly surprised to find out that our luggage would automatically be sent over to the hotel without us having to deal with it."

The Alaska Railroad and Denali National Park are intrinsically linked. For nearly 50 years, the park was served solely by rail. Even though the Parks Highway, which opened in 1971, made the place accessible by car, most modern-day visitors still transit through the Denali Depot. To come by rail is to be a part of the grand history of Alaska's most famous national park.
Served by rail 50 years longer than by road.
The railroad's flagship Denali Star train runs the scenic 234-mile route from Anchorage to Denali Park. After boarding and settling into comfortable seats in either Adventure Class or GoldStar Dome cars, on clear days passengers enjoy their first glimpse of Denali just 30 minutes into the trip. More views and photo opportunities arise as the track passes through Wasilla and north into the Matanuska-Susitna Valley. Those upcoming viewpoints are announced along the way by charming onboard hosts.
It's a pleasure to walk the train, stopping into the Wilderness Café car for a snack or coffee and rotating through top-deck dome seating area. The route draws ever closer to Denali and its neighboring peaks, at one point sweeping to within just over 40 miles of the summit. After reaching Broad Pass, which marks both the highest point on the Alaska Railroad and the lowest pass in the Alaska Range, the train winds through a wide taiga plateau before pulling into the Denali Depot.
The Alaska Railroad offers two levels of service between Anchorage and Denali Park: Adventure Class and GoldStar Dome. Adventure Class passengers enjoy spacious cars with tall windows and large seats, access to a shared dome observation car, and the ability to easily walk between different cars on the train. The GoldStar Dome offers passengers luxury rail service with reserved upper deck seating beneath large dome windows and all-inclusive meals. Alaska Tour & Travel is happy to offer our guests the choice of service to best suit their needs and budget. Click here for more train service details.
Snacks and beverages are available for purchase onboard in the Wilderness Café. Full-service meals are served in the lower level of the GoldStar dome car for GoldStar passengers only. Breakfast, lunch, all non-alcoholic beverages, and two alcoholic beverages are included in the GoldStar ticket price.
Bring a camera, medications, and government issued photo ID. Bring a credit or debit card for additional onboard purchases (cash not accepted). It is a good idea to dress in layers, since the temperature can vary depending on the weather and the train car's heating and cooling system.
Check in at the depot with a valid government issued photo ID one hour prior to departure. Boarding passes with seat assignments will be issued then. All Adventure Class and GoldStar Dome passengers are assigned seats by the Alaska Railroad upon check in at the depot. The Alaska Railroad offers checked baggage service. Passengers are allowed two checked bags plus one carry on, with dimension and weight restrictions like those of airlines. The Alaska Railroad charges $20 per item for oversized or excess baggage.
Passengers can transfer to the Anchorage Depot by taxi, rideshare, or hotel shuttle (where available). Upon arrival into Denali Park, guests are met at the depot by local hotel and lodge shuttles.
