Overview
At the renowned Alaska Native Heritage Center, visitors are introduced to the rich and diverse cultures of the 11 indigenous groups of Alaska. The Heritage Center's main building is comprised of the Hall of Cultures and the Gathering Place. The Hall of Cultures features interactive exhibits and Alaskan Native artwork, while the Gathering Place is center stage for dancing, Native Games demonstrations, and storytelling. There is also a small theater showing short films that detail the geography, climate, and lifestyles of each Native group.
Cultures still alive in modern day Alaska.
The Heritage Center's expansive outdoor area features six authentic, full-sized Alaskan Native dwellings. Each site is situated around the beautiful Lake Tiulana. As guests move from dwelling to dwelling, they have the chance to chat with cultural representatives. Rather than societies of the past, these cultures are alive in modern day Alaska. It's a fascinating way to discover the unique traditions, values, and stories that shape them.
The Alaska Native Heritage Center also houses a small gift shop and a café serving espresso, smoothies, baked goods, and heartier fare like reindeer dogs and salmon burgers.
