Mornings at the historic Anchorage Depot are abuzz with passengers eager to board the full-service Coastal Classic bound for Seward. The trip treats travelers to some of the most scenic miles of rail in the state.
After passengers settle into their comfortable seats in Adventure Class or GoldStar Dome cars, the train departs the depot and slowly emerges into an expansive Alaskan landscape. The route meanders for 50 picturesque miles along the Turnagain Arm, a body of water with North America's second highest tidal change. The view from each side of the train offers something unique. To the right, beluga whales can sometimes be seen chasing salmon on the incoming tide. To the left, passengers often spot Dall sheep balancing on the steep, rocky mountainsides above.
One of the most scenic train routes in Alaska.
Beyond the ski town of Girdwood, the track leaves the Turnagain and heads south into pristine Kenai Mountains wilderness. The train passes through the Spencer Glacier Whistle Stop and arcs along the Bartlett Glacier for one of the best photo ops on the rail. Topping out among the alpine meadows of Grandview Pass, the track then descends to the east side of Kenai Lake. The striking turquoise color of this beautiful 16-mile lake is a result of sunlight striking suspended glacial silt in the water. The trip concludes at about 11:20 AM at the Seward Depot.
The Alaska Railroad offers two levels of service between Anchorage and Seward: Adventure Class and GoldStar Dome. Adventure Class passengers enjoy spacious cars with tall windows and large seats, access to a shared dome observation car, and the ability to easily walk between different cars on the train. The GoldStar Dome offers passengers luxury rail service with reserved upper deck seating beneath large dome windows and all-inclusive meals. Alaska Tour & Travel is happy to offer our guests the choice of service to best suit their needs and budget. Click here for more train service details.
Snacks and beverages are available for purchase onboard in the Wilderness Café. Full-service meals are served in the lower level of the GoldStar dome car for GoldStar passengers only. Breakfast is included in the GoldStar ticket price.
Bring a camera, medications, and government issued photo ID. Bring a credit or debit card for additional onboard purchases (cash not accepted). It is a good idea to dress in layers, since the temperature can vary depending on the weather and the train car's heating and cooling system.
Check in at the depot with a valid government issued photo ID one hour prior to departure. Boarding passes with seat assignments will be issued then. All Adventure Class and GoldStar Dome passengers are assigned seats by the Alaska Railroad upon check in at the depot. The Alaska Railroad offers checked baggage service. Passengers are allowed two checked bags plus one carry on, with dimension and weight restrictions like those of airlines. The Alaska Railroad charges $20 per item for oversized or excess baggage.
Passengers can transfer to the Anchorage Depot by taxi, rideshare, or hotel shuttle (where available). Upon arrival into Seward, guests are typically met at the depot by hotel and tour company shuttles. The depot is one block from the north end of the Small Boat Harbor.
